Elmar Schaffeler

Technical Consultant

Elmar Schaffeler has over 36 years experience in environmental engineering. He has been involved in over 400 environmental projects in Australia and overseas (including over 300 contaminated land projects and over 50 landfill projects) and has been lecturing in Environmental Impact Assessment (University of Adelaide) since 1999. Since 1996 he has presented 10 technical papers on site contamination, air quality and QA/QC at national and international conferences.

His key areas of expertise include contaminated land investigations and management, waste management infrastructure design and construction, environmental management of infrastructure projects and environmental monitoring. Since 1986 Elmar Schaffeler has been playing a leading role in over 300 site remediation projects including the Horwood Bagshaw remediation at Mile End, the Harbourside Quay remediation at Port Adelaide, the Florence Crescent remediation at Brompton, the Brompton Redevelopment project, the remediation of WMC’s sulphur compound at Port Adelaide, the Central West Precinct (Balfours) redevelopment and the Edinburgh HNA HC1 and HC2 projects.

In addition Elmar has significant experience in the preparation and implementation of environmental management plans for infrastructure projects (e.g. the Adelaide Crafers Highway and Stages 1 and 2 of the Southern Expressway) and land remediation projects, the investigation, preparation and implementation of dust management plans and the modelling of soil gas migration paths.

Throughout his time in the industry Elmar has developed proven skills in risk communications and negotiating environmental outcomes with regulatory agencies including the South Australian EPA.
